Union Functions & Events

Celebratory Events

Over the past years, Ghana Union Greater Birmingham has been organising and hosting key events to mark important occasions in our nation’s history for the benefit of the Ghanaian community in Birmingham and its environs. Ghana Independence Day is the main celebratory event in the union’s calendar. We normally commemorate this major event with a dinner dance and invite the Ghana High Commissioner to the UK & Ireland, and other top dignitaries in Birmingham to grace and add gravitas to the occasion. We have also introduced a festival of nine lessons & carols service and included it in our yearly programme, which has become very popular and a tradition on its ow in our events calendar. The service celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ that is traditionally followed at Christmas. The story of the fall of humanity, the promise of the Messiah, and the birth of Jesus are told in nine short Bible readings from Genesis, the prophetic books and the Gospels, interspersed with the singing of Christmas carols, hymns, and music. The GUM Christmas Carols Service is non-denominational and provides an alternative choice to the traditional English Christmas carols service. We have tweaked the English version and added our little touches to give it a Ghanaian flavour, and also to bring a cultural dimension to the service.

Collaboration & Partnership

Since our ground-breaking work in collaboration and networking started in October 2012, this partnership has continued and flourished. The spirit of collaboration and working in partnership was evident at memorable and historic occasions such as the inauguration of the Ghana Union Wolverhampton, the launch of the Northampton Ghanaian Union, a ‘Taste of Ghana’ event in Wellington, Shropshire, and Coventry Ghana Association Christmas event.  No doubt, these activities have strengthened our partnership and collaboration with other Ghanaian unions, associations, and other groups in the Midlands Region.

Summer fun Games & Trips

The summer fun games and trips to popular holiday resorts in the UK have been a feature in the union’s activities over the years. We have organised summer trips to favourite seaside resorts like Blackpool, and also to theme parks like Drayton Manor Theme Park etc for our members and families to have fun during the summer breaks. The Birmingham union also took part in the summer games that were organised by GUM for the groups affiliated to the regional umbrella body for Ghanaian groups in the Midlands region. The summer fun games normally involve football matches between the local unions in the Midlands region. The Birmingham union {GUGB}, represented by Ghana All-Stars FC on two occasions have won the friendly football matches. Other fun games include ‘ampe’, a Ghanaian game played mainly by women, board games such as ‘Dame'{draught}, ludo, scrabble, monopoly, etc.
